British Steel retains BES 6001 certification

The British Standards Institution (BSI) has again continued certification of British Steel’s products against the BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing standard following detailed auditing across our operations.

Sustainable practices remain hugely important to us and our customers so we’re delighted this has been recognised in an independent audit of our products and processes.

Simon Walker, Senior Environment Specialist, said: “This is an important achievement for our business, the recertification is independent verification that we have effective systems in place to ensure responsible sourcing.”

The BES 6001 certificate covers all British Steel products manufactured in Scunthorpe, Teesside and Skinningrove.

The audit investigates a wide range of areas including material traceability and environmental management systems in our supply chain as well as our supplier management systems, greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, and waste management.

Simon said: “Sustainable practices remain hugely important to us, our customers and stakeholders. They enable us to improve our social and environmental performance, meet regulatory requirements and meet our customers’ expectations.

“Our retention of a ‘good’ rating in this year’s audit allows our customers to demonstrate they’re sourcing products from a responsible supplier and being able to benchmark our performance is particularly important.”

Next year’s recertification audit will be against a new version of the BES 6001 standard (v4.0) which has an enhanced emphasis on social aspects of responsible sourcing, sustainable procurement and supply chain engagement. It also adds environmental themes including biodiversity and site stewardship.
